Every cycle has its own rhythm, and yours is the one that counts. Some people notice their skin, energy or mood shift through the month. Logging it is how you find out what's true for you.

Days 1 to 5

  • Day 1 is the first day of bleeding

  • Some people notice their skin settles
  • Some feel their energy lift

Notice how your skin feels once your period ends.

Days 13 to 15

Ovulation

  • A rough calendar estimate, often off by days
  • Some notice clear, slippery discharge
  • Some feel a one-sided twinge

An estimate only. Never use it as birth control.

Days 16 to 28

Luteal

  • Some people get breakouts in the week or so before their period
  • Some notice cravings, bloating or tender breasts
  • Others notice very little

Snap a selfie this week. Compare it next cycle.

How each phase can feel, and who can help.

Read the phase guide A guide written for partners. It never shows your dates, logs or photos.
Tuesday, October 20
Day 18, luteal

Your cycle and your skin, side by side.

  • Spin to any day. See your estimated cycle day and what you logged before.
  • Five-second check-ins. Tap a face, then any symptoms you have. That's it.
  • Patterns in plain words. After a few cycles you may see lines like "In 3 past cycles, you logged breakouts on day 24."
  • Your skin notes in one place. Keep your products, photos and check-ins right next to your cycle.

Five seconds a day.

The more you check in, the clearer your patterns get. After a few cycles, you can look back at what you logged on each day of your cycle.

Liz Portugal, medical aesthetician

Why I made this.

Hi, I'm Liz. I've spent twelve years in beauty, first as a makeup artist and now as a medical aesthetician in Toronto. In the clinic, clients often ask me why their skin seems to change from one week to the next.

I built Skin by Phase so you can track your own pattern in one place, right next to your cycle. Everything in here is general information, not a personal treatment plan.

Say hi on Instagram, @lizportugalofficial

Skin by Phase shares general wellness and skincare guidance. I'm an aesthetician, not a doctor, so please see a health professional for anything medical.

Good questions.

Can I use Skin by Phase as birth control?

No. Predictions are estimates from your past cycles and can be off by several days, especially around ovulation. Please don't use them to prevent or plan a pregnancy.

My cycle is irregular. Will it still work?

Yes, it just gets less exact. Skin by Phase averages your last six cycles and leaves out very short or very long gaps, so the more you log, the closer it gets. You can always tap "My period started" to correct it. If your periods are very irregular, stop altogether or change suddenly, it's worth checking in with your doctor.

I'm on the pill, a hormonal IUD or another hormonal method.

Hormonal birth control changes or pauses your natural phases, so the phase estimates may not match what's happening in your body. You can still log periods, symptoms and skin, and spot your own patterns.

What about PCOS or perimenopause?

You can absolutely use it, and logging your skin and symptoms can be really useful to bring to your doctor. Just know that predictions are less reliable when cycles vary a lot.

Is the skin advice medical advice?

No. It's general guidance from my experience as a medical aesthetician, not a diagnosis or treatment plan. Everyone's skin is different and results vary. For acne that won't settle, pain, or anything that worries you, see your doctor or a dermatologist.

Who can see my data?

Your entries and skin photos are tied to your account, and other members can't see them. Liz can read the questions and feedback you send her. Our hosting and email providers process data to run the app. Nothing is sold or used for ads, and you can download or erase your data from the app. Read the privacy policy.

What does Plus cost, and can I cancel?

Tracking is free. Plus is a monthly or yearly subscription you can cancel anytime from the app, and you keep it until the end of the month or year you paid for.

How do I put it on my phone?
